iLenSys Compliance Manager Newsletters 19 May 2026

Welcome to iCM Quarterly Insights

Welcome to the Q1 2026 edition of the iCM Compliance Newsletter.

In this issue, we focus on a significant regulatory development impacting manufacturers who place electrical and electronic equipment on the EU market: recent updates to EU RoHS Annex III lead-related exemptions, formally adopted by the European Commission and now in force.

Our goal is to provide clear, timely insights to help compliance, engineering, and product teams stay informed and prepare for upcoming exemption transitions.

Regulatory Spotlight: EU RoHS Exemption Updates

Overview of the Update

  • Directive : EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU
  • Area Impacted : Annex III (Lead-related exemptions)
  • Commission Adoption : 8 September 2025
  • Official Journal Publication : November 2025
  • Entry Into Force : December 2025

These updates include:

  • More precise and narrower scope definitions
  • Introduction of application-specific sub-exemptions
  • New expiry timelines extending through 2026–2027

Why This Update Matters

Exemptions under RoHS allow certain restricted substances to remain in use when substitution is not yet technically or economically feasible. However, the regulatory trend is clear:

  • Exemptions are becoming more narrowly defined
  • Renewal timelines are becoming shorter
  • Manufacturers must provide stronger technical justification
  • Expiry-driven compliance risk is increasing

For organisations placing products on the EU market, early awareness and preparation are critical.

Key Changes Introduced in the Latest Update

1. Lead in High Melting Temperature Solders (7(a))

  • Renewed until June 2027
  • New sub-exemptions valid until December 2027

2. Lead in Glass & Ceramic Components (7(c))

  • Validity extended
  • Additional application-specific sub-exemptions introduced
  • Expiry timelines up to December 2027

3. Lead as an Alloying Element (6 series)

  • Several broad exemptions restructured or withdrawn
  • Replaced by more specific, narrowly scoped entries
  • Most expiring around June 2027

These changes require manufacturers to reassess how and where exemptions are applied across their product portfolios.

Recommended Actions for Q1 2026

Whether you’re an existing iCM customer or evaluating structured compliance processes, the following steps are recommended this quarter:

1. Review Product Dependencies

Identify which products or components rely on 6-, 7(a)-, or 7(c)-series exemptions.

2. Revalidate Scope Applicability

Confirm that the updated exemption wording still aligns with your intended product applications.

3. Plan for Expiries

Flag exemptions expiring in:

  • 2026 – immediate attention recommended
  • 2027 – early planning advised

4. Strengthen Documentation

Ensure technical evidence, supplier declarations, and justification records are centralised and current.

5. Align Internal Teams

Share upcoming regulatory risks with engineering, quality, procurement, and compliance teams early.

How iCM Supports Your Compliance Workflow

iCM helps organisations stay organised and informed throughout changing RoHS requirements by offering:

  • Centralised storage of RoHS-related documents and declarations
  • Structured organisation of product compliance information across components and materials
  • Version comparison of regulations, to help teams understand what has changed
  • Audit-ready documentation, supporting internal, customer, and regulatory reviews

While exemption assessment and applicability decisions remain internal compliance responsibilities, iCM helps ensure that product compliance information, supporting documentation, and records remain organised, accessible, and audit ready.

Transition Timeline at a Glance

  • Several updated RoHS Annex III exemptions now have confirmed expiry dates across 2026–2027, depending on the exemption series (6, 7(a), 7(c)).
  • Manufacturers should review these timelines early in 2026 to plan for potential product redesigns, supplier updates, and documentation alignment, particularly where exemptions are narrowing in scope or transitioning to application-specific entries.
  • Teams are encouraged to prioritise products that rely on exemptions approaching expiry, as these may require earlier engineering or sourcing decisions.
